I’m not sure personally what to make of it. I read all over the news and the
‘net about a mass-protest recently. I’m sure everyone else has, too. I suppose
it was only inevitable. With Tom Cruise’s “behavior” on TV not too long ago,
and that embarassing leak of the video that the Scientologists clamored to get
removed from the public eye, it was only a matter of time before something
happened, right?
And happen it did.
For anyone that doesn’t know about the “controversy” swirling around
Scientology, I suggest you enter their name in any search engine. By all
means, go to their website as well, but don’t just go there. I’ll let the
abundance of case studies speak for themselves. Now, I have nothing personally
against religion, any religion. What I do find truly absurd is the notion that
you can silence your critics. The right to critique something is a right
GUARANTEED under our Constitution (The U.S. one, for those overseas persons
who may end up reading this). We have a freedom to speak, think, and express
ourselves however we see fit. This fundamental right, is part of what makes
Scientology itself possible. If we didn’t have the freedom to think as we
please, then we couldn’t have the freedom to assemble as a religion as well.
The reason why a religion would want to prevent someone from speaking freely
in debate against it, escapes me. Perhaps they can clarify their position on
this, perhaps they cannot. We’ll see. Certainly, this issue is not going to
go away anytime soon.
